Episode 19: I Love to Hear Those Stories (December, 2014): Rielle Navitski on Latin American Film History; Fieldnotes Interview:  Thomas Elsaesser

December 14, 2014 by Chris Becker

This month we bring you the great film scholar Thomas Elsaesser as part of our collaboration with the new Fieldnotes project. Fieldnotes is conducting oral histories with notable media scholars, so look for more great interviews in coming episodes, and listen to the full interviews at the SCMS website.  We also have a fascinating conversation with Rielle Navitski about researching Latin American film history, based on her contribution to a recent “In Focus” section of Cinema Journal on the subject.

And if that weren't enough, we're giving away a NEW CAR! All you have to do is be one of the first fifty to take the Aca-Media survey here. Fair warning: Michael has not yet told us what kind of car he has in mind for us to give away. But take the survey anyway; maybe he's the mystery buyer behind this one?

Finally, Chris and Michael discuss baseball players who don't have a clue and a couple of British detectives who do.  Even though Chris herself doesn't have a clue how to say Aca Hyphen Media Dot Org, that's where to go for show notes and more episodes.

July 30, 2014 by Chris Becker

This month's episode features Jennifer Petersen on the famous 1915 Mutual v. Ohio case: the Supreme Court's ruling in that case that films are not speech seems obviously wrong today, but Jen helps us understand the cultural context of that decision and its legacy. We also bring you a Vox Scholari segment: an (academic) star-studded lineup of reading recommendations to get you excited about everything from cultural geography to intertextuality.  Finally, Chris and Michael discuss all the shows they hope to catch up on.
